Introduction
There are many career paths to follow in corrections. A brief overview of careers at the federal, state, and local levels is given in this activity.
Federal Bureau of Prisons (BoP): Categories of opportunities in facilities operated by the BoP include roles in inmate custody and programs, health services, operational readiness, and support and administration.
State Departments of Correction: Careers at the state level include correctional officers, counselors, clerks, food services workers, medical technicians, and nurses.
Local Corrections: The job of corrections officers and deputies includes booking prisoners, guarding and monitoring prisoners, preventing fights, transporting prisoners to and from court, and inventorying possessions of inmates.
