Do not participate:
If someone shares private information about another person and you do not know if it is true, do not share that information with others. Even if you believe the information, stop to consider the consequences of sharing it with other people.
Say something positive:
In your reaction to a negative piece of gossip, share a positive comment about that person.
Recognize and avoid gossipers:
Try to avoid people who spread gossip by staying focused on your role and your position. If gossip cannot be avoided, try changing the conversation to something about the gossipers. Gossipers engage in gossip because they want attention. Give them attention by changing the subject to ask their advice on an unrelated matter or to compliment their recent work.
Keep your work life and personal life separate:
Gossipers are just as likely to gossip about you as they are about others. If you remain focused and professional in the workplace, gossipers will not have material to work with.
Report the gossiper:
If the gossip is significantly interfering with workplace relationships or productivity, discuss the matter with your manager or with human resources staff.
