Perfect Equality
The vertical (Y) axis measures the cumulative share of income in a country. As you move up the vertical axis (from 0 to 100), more and more of the country’s income is included.
1980
This shows that income is not equally distributed in the United States. The farther away the Lorenz curve is from the line of perfect equality, the more unequal the distribution of income is in a country.
2011
States in 1980. This means that the actual income distribution in the United States became more unequal over time. Income was less equally distributed in 2011 than in 1980 in the United States.
