Introduction

Guided imagery is the practice of relaxation and mental picturing to improve mood and physical well-being. An individual uses his or her own imagination and thoughts to boost mental and physical health. The therapist’s role is to guide the individual through a meditative visualization process. The therapist may use specific images or encourage the individual to use images from within. The purpose of guided imagery varies and ranges from creating a sense of well-being and peace to reducing stress, controlling pain, preparing for surgery, or decreasing symptoms of anxiety. The side effects can include sleepiness and an extreme state of relaxation (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, & Bucher, 2013).

Imagery is most effective when the client discovers the most comfortable and relaxing position. The client is instructed to take slow, deep breaths. The client is also instructed to focus on all senses (e.g., sight, hearing, touch, and smell). Imagery can aid in targeting a disease, problem, or stressor.
